Grameen Shakti, the green microcredit success

In 1996, to almost universal indifference, Muhammad Yunus founded Grameen Shakti, a company specialising in equipping Bangladeshi rural areas, firstly in solar energy then in biogas. Today the social enterprise is a success story yet its business model has not been reproduced in another country.

Borrower Quote

I am a taxi driver. I have been engaged in this type of service since my wedding. The cost of gasoline in our country is increasing day after day but the cost for gas is cheaper than gasoline. This is why I want to purchase a gas cylinder to set it in my car and this way, reduce my expenses. For this purpose I applied for loan to HUMO in hope to buy a gas cylinder and I will be able to get more profit and spend it for my family to improve our economic condition.

(In some former USSR countries like Tajikistan, most cars have adaptable motors to run either with gasoline or gas, after a light adaptation. Natural gas is cheaper and is a clean alternative to fossil fuels)
