$3 million (micro)loan for solar panels in Central America
The Inter-American Development Bank (IDB) decided to grant a loan of three million dollars to a private Honduran foundation, “Fundación Covelo”. It will equip 6,000 families with individual solar energy systems in Honduras, El Salvador and Belize. The Foundation will rely on Microfinance Institutions (MFIs) for developing microcredit offers around solar panels. As a result, each family’s total budget comes to 500 dollars.

Microinsurance is given a makeover in Brazil
Bradesco, the main Brazilian insurance company, has announced that it will distribute new microinsurance offers by some rather original means. Several insurance products aimed at low-income Brazilians could in fact be subscribed to directly over mobile phones, via text messages, or at local sales points: neighbourhood shops, newspaper kiosks and even beauty salons!
The distribution of offers by these new channels will be tested in December. Then, as from January 2012, Sao Paulo and Rio de Janeiro residents will be able to subscribe to accident and funeral insurance.

A pioneering “green” microfinance project in Latin America
To help small businesses from Latin America and the Caribbean use renewable energy and “clean technologies”, the Inter-American Development Bank (IDB) and the Nordic Development Fund are launching “Ecomicro”. With a budget of $7 million over seven years, the project will rely on the continent’s Microfinance Institutions (MFIs) to provide their customers with “green” microloans.

There’s no crisis for microcredit in Latin America
25% –that’s the growth rate recorded overall by Microfinance Institutions in South America and the Caribbean in 2010. The current total amount of credit is US$ 15.2 billion, compared with 12.3 billion the previous year.
